The underdog singer and songwriter Beck won the Album of the Year Award at Sunday's Grammy Awards for "Morning Phase." This prevented Sam Smith, a British Pop/Soul singer, from winning the top four awards at the famous yearly event.

Beck's win was a shocker because his album defeated those of several favorites. They included Smith, Beyonce, and Pharrell Williams.

Beck said of his album, "We made this record at my house for the most part," according to Yahoo. He humorously thanked his children for letting the loud sounds of his music-making keep them awake past their bedtime.

Beck's album "Capital" also won an award for Best Rock Album. So during his music career he has won a total of five Grammy awards.

But it was still a huge night for Mr. Smith, who won awards in three major categories. That included awards for Best Song of the Year, Best Record of the Year, and Best New Artist.

In fact, Smith won a grand total of four awards. He also won the award for Best Pop Vocal Album, bringing the count to four.

Smith thanked his ex-lover for being the the music on "In the Lonely Hour," his album that has sold over a million copies. He said to the ex-lover, "Thanks so much for breaking my heart, because you got me four Grammys," according to Variety.

Backstage, Smith was asked if he had contacted his ex-lover about his Grammy award. Smith jokingly said he would allow him to touch the Grammy one time.

Smith also noted that before making his album, he was taking virtually every possible step to make his music popular. But he was more successful when he started being true to himself.
