Dominick Cruz, who will be fighting at UFC 199 against Urijah Faber to defend his title, bluntly stated that "Conor [McGregor] is a failure." This statement was in line with the current issue surrounding McGregor and the UFC management.
As a background, it can be remembered that "The Notorious," McGregor had a skirmish with the UFC management over a promotional and marketing engagement gone wrong after the Irishman declined to go Vegas to perform the said commercial and promotional routines. According to previous reports, the reason behind the absence of McGregor is his total commitment and focus on his training in preparation for the supposed rematch against Nate Diaz at UFC 200.
Since Cruz already experienced media tours and promotions many times, he can objectively view and comment about the current relationship of McGregor and the UFC. According to him, the current situation of McGregor is a "kind of a mixed thing," proving that media presence may actually work against a fighter and his success.
"Conor is a failure of his own success. He's so good at this media that they're going to ask him to do a ton. But I'll be honest, if the UFC said, 'hey Dominick, we're going to pay you 100 times what you're getting paid now and you're going to make Conor McGregor money,' I'll go live with Ariel Helwani for my entire camp, eat everything you eat, do every radio interview you do, go out there and be ready to fight," said Cruz quoted by MMA Fighting during a guesting.
Though the sentiments of a fellow fighter, Cruz, is somehow uplifting, this does not easily erase the reported tension between UFC management and McGregor. As a result of the uncertainty behind the career of McGregor, various rumors are surfacing including the nonsensical fight between McGregor and Floyd Mayweather Jr.
But despite the uncertainty, it's hard to put into conclusion the possible rematch of two great UFC fighters, McGregor and Nate Diaz. Negotiations are still going, and a possible rematch may happen after the fight of Dominick Cruz and Urijah Faber at UFC 199, it could happen at UFC 202, according to SB Nation.
