Fitness Guru Richard Simmons extended his gratitude to all those who expressed concern when he was hospitalized on June 3, Friday. He was released from the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles on June 4, Saturday after reports circulated that he was admitted to the hospital due to his bizarre behavior.
It came out that he was admitted due to dehydration, contrary to the initial reports. Before midnight of June 3, Friday, it was reported that someone from his home called 911 after the fitness expert acted strangely.
In a statement obtained by PEOPLE, Simmons thanked his fans and all those concerned who got worried when he was brought to the hospital. "I was dehydrated and needed some fluids and now I am feeling great! Summer is here - drink plenty of liquids. Big hugs and kisses for caring."
The paramedics and the Los Angeles Fire Department rushed to Simmons' home in Hollywood Hills about 11:52 p.m. After a quick assessment, the paramedics suggested that he should be brought to the hospital for evaluation.
The Cedars-Sinai staff tested him for possible dementia, stroke and other illness. Without confirmation, it seemed that stroke was ruled out from the list.
Earlier that day when he was taken to the hospital, Simmons shared a photo of him with tattooed men in his Facebook account. He was wearing temporary decals and was standing next to the men.
Simmons became reclusive from his family, friends and from the spotlight for nearly three years. He cutoff communication from everyone that made his loved ones worried about him.
The fitness guru admitted that he wanted to rest from his celebrity life due to his knee problem. Despite his claim, most of his friends were not convinced with his condition.
In March 2016, Simmons hit the headlines after his friend reported that he was held as a hostage by his housekeeper, Teresa Reveles. Simmons cleared the issue and told Entertainment Online that he was not kidnapped and was in his home that time.
"I love all the people who worry about me," Simmons said. "But it was time for me to take some time to be by myself."
Simmons added that he had been traveling and teaching classes for the last 40 years until he had a knee injury. He also claimed that he was home the whole time working out and doing the things he has not done for a long time.
