Descendants of the Sun Supporting Actors

Getting the Best Drama Show award at the 52nd Baeksang Art Awards on Saturday must have changed the mind of KBS about producing a Season 2 of "Descendants of the Sun." However, because of the very tight schedule of the lead stars, Song Joong-ki and Song Hye Kyo, the two would likely not be in the second season.

Instead, Movienewsguide reported that the two other South Korean actors who played supporting roles to the lead actors in Season 1 would likely be promoted to lead actors. Season 2 would focus on the characters of Sergeant Major Seo Dae Young and Yoon Myung Joo, played by Jin Goo and Kim Ji Won, respectively, in Season 1.

In April, Soompi reported that KBS was in talks to make a Season 2 of the blockbuster Korean Hallyyu as its show of gratitude to fans of “Descendants of the Sun” who showed their continued support for the show. Jung Sung-ho of KBS then said the second season would likely be shown in 2017.

The couple also was an audience favorite and their love scenes were more romantic than between the characters played by the two Songs. In Season 1, General Yoon, the father of Yoon Myung Joo, disapproved of the growing relationship between the couple. The general sends the sergeant major back to South Korea which made his daughter cry and ask why is he considerate toward other women but not to her.

But unlike Song Joong-ki and Song Hye Kyo who continue to be hounded by secret romance rumors in real life even after the show has stopped airing, it likely would not happen to the two upcoming lead stars. That’s because while Kim Ji-Won wants a man like Jin Goo’s character as future husband, Jin Goo is married and has a child.

The second season would still be aired by KBS 2TV and likely iQiyi in China, although other broadcasters in the region may likely sign in for exclusive airing rights too in their countries.
