The woman who was seen in a viral video on Weibo being forced inside a car trunk said she would not file charges against the man who did it to her.
The hashtag #The Woman in the Trunk# accompanied the video which when it became viral led the police to investigate. It turned out the couple had a big argument when the incident happened. Because the wife was not injured despite being forced inside the trunk, she is not filing charges because they want to live their life in peace together.
However, some Chinese netizens chided the wife. Blogger He’erdao wrote, “You thought this was still something between you? This has now become a public matter. Many people thought this was a kidnapping case. Did you think you could leave it at this? You think it is normal to put someone in the car trunk?”
Some Weibo users, such as She Huimin, opined that the man should be arrested for his violence whether the wife complained or not. In addition, his driver’s license must be suspended and he be taken in custody for 10 days.
But one user shared that the couple lives in the same village as they and the man is known for being violent and a heavy drinker, while the wife is actually afraid of getting a divorce.
It is not the first time that a viral video of men committing violence against women. But beyond the man’s violence, what is noticeable is that bystanders who witness the incident do not lift a finger to stop the violence.
The explanation is that many of the bystanders think it is a domestic incident, like what happened between the couple involved in the car trunk scandal.
