Samsung Galaxy S5 updated with Android Lollipop 5.0

A new report has surfaced suggesting Samsung could offer its rumored upcoming Galaxy S6 in two variants. One will have a regular screen, while the other will allegedly have a wrap-around display.

The Galaxy S6 will come with three-sided display, reported Bloomberg, citing people with direct knowledge of the matter. The screen will reportedly cover the front, the left and the right sides of the upcoming Samsung device.

The report seems to validate previous speculation of a Samsung Galaxy S6 with a curved screen. The rumors started when invitations to Samsung's event next month started to appear in people's inbox.

The invitations contained the image of a curved line that can be seen under the statement "What's Next." The image is reminiscent of the Note Edge's shape and screen, although the device silhouetted in the invite was not named.

The invite is for Samsung's unboxing event is set to happen in Barcelona on March 1. Samsung has declined to comment regarding the device's specifications in an e-mailed request for information from Bloomberg.

Other than a wrap-around display, both upcoming 5.1-inch Galaxy phones will use metal frames, according to Bloomberg's source. The source added that the metal frames will be supplied by BYD Electronic International Co., a subsidiary of Chinese automaker BYD Co. that is partially owned by Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway Inc.

Samsung has also reportedly dropped Qualcomm processors to use its own chip, the Exynos 7420, in the predecessor to the Galaxy S5, stated Engadget. The reason for this is that the Qualcomm chip overheated during testing, according to Bloomberg's sources.

Samsung's move to up the ante in its devices' displays and processors is in an effort to revive earning and recapture market share lost to rivals including Apple. The Cupertino firm captured sales with the release of its iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, which marked the company's entry into the phablet category that was pioneered by Samsung.
