Swedish Authorities Shuts Down Several Torrent Sites; Police Arrests Five Individuals

Two weeks after the resurrection of torrent site The Pirate Bay the Swedish authorities has confirmed that it had shut down several torrents sites and had arrested five individuals known to have been working on it..

Two months ago The Pirate Bay servers was raided by the Swedish police who caused the torrent site to halt its entire operations. The raid has had a great impact on the torrent community considering the site's raid-proof reputation, according to Torrent Freak.

However, on Jan. 31, news began spreading that The Pirate Bay website has resumed its operation and the website sports a "phoenix" on its front page, probably as an allusion to the mythical creature that is widely known an a symbol rebirth.

While the apparent resurrection of The Pirate Bay could deal a major blow into the Swedish authorities, actions in order to suppress torrent operation are still on going.

Swedish prosecutor Mats Ljungqvist said, "We have made significant seizures, but I will not say more than that."

Five unnamed individuals were in police custody due to involvement in the illegal distribution of copyrighted movies, according to Newsweek. The report added that the arrests were done in accordance to the legal demands by some major Hollywood studios along with the Swedish anti-piracy group Rights Alliance.

Sweden's second largest torrent website Tankafetast was one of the many torrent sites that were taken down by the authorities. Tankafetast has been taken down before but the site has managed to reemerge. However, this recent legal action against the website proves to be more serious compared to previous attacks.

In related news, the Swedish government has also pushed a resolution that targets domains being used by Pirate Bay and other torrent sites. The authorities are targeting the Punkt SE registry regulates two of Pirate Bay's .SE domain.
