Beginning July 26 until the end of October, Nintendo 3DS owners could use their Poke Miles to buy Rare Candy, Heart Scales and other items at half the cost. The discounts are being offered in preparation for the Pokemon Global Link (PGL) system going offline in late October.

The temporary closure is to prepare for the release of Pokemon Sun and Moon, reported Polygon. Several online feature of the website would not be available to players of Pokemon X, Y, Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. Also offered 50 percent off are online minigames. The discounts are Pokemon Company's way of compensating players for the forthcoming shutdown.

When PGL goes offline, the site would be updated to work on Pokemon Sun and Pokemon Moon. During this period, users would not be able to link the five Pokemon games with the PGL or see data from the games reflected. But they could use other non-PGL services through the internet.

Among the popular features that would still be available are Global Trade System and Wonder Trade, while players would still be able to fight each other online and get Mystery Gifts. When Sun and Moon launch on Nov. 18 on Nintendo 3DS, the two features would remain open, assured PGL.

Among the new features that would come to the latest version of the online system, first introduced for Pokemon X and Y, are local and online competitive battles hosted by trainers. Rules for each tournament are determined by the trainers.
