'My Love Hit the War' Makes Waves in China

The drama is set during the time of the Battle of Songhu in Shanghai.

Wartime romance TV series "My Love Hit the War" is making waves in Chinese small screen entertainment scene, China Daily reported.

The hit Chinese TV series is composed of 46 episodes starring Gong Zheng and Xu Fanxi.

The TV show, set in the late 1930s, follows the story of a fictional Chinese secret agent and his romance with a doctor during the Battle of Songhu in Shanghai.

The said battle is considered as one of the bloodiest battles China has witnessed during the period of Japanese invasion.

The main protagonist is also seeking revenge for his sister's murder.

The series was aired on Beijing Satellite TV on July 23 and has since earned over 5 million views on iQiyi, one of the country's biggest online streaming portals.

According to scriptwriter Zhang Yongchen, "My Love Hit the War" banks on the power of romantic narratives told with war as an important theme.

During a promotional event at the Chinese capital on July 22, Zhang shared that "wartime love stories were 'more romantic and dramatic' compared with other times," the article wrote.

The scriptwriter further recounted that he browsed and researched local chronicles of Shanghai and Suzhou in order to properly capture the story's historic scenes.

The primary location for this series was Tongli, a picturesque town in Suzhou, director Pan Yue noted.

In the same month of the hit's release, another spy-theme drama premiered on Beijing Satellite TV.

Debuting on July 7, "The Chaser" is considered as the Chinese counterpart of the Hollywood smash movie, "Kingsman: The Secret Service."

The plot, also set in the 30s, centers on the story of a young hoodlum who is taking a revenge after his adopted father was killed by Kuomintang.

"The Chaser" cast includes veterans Zhu Yuchen and Li Xiaoran.

The detective TV series comprises 32 episodes.
