NBA Rumors: Ray Allen to Milwaukee Bucks Most Likely Destination for Return

Former Miami Heat shooting guard Ray Allen.

The NBA rumor mill had let up with the rumors about the possible return of Ray Allen, but the legendary shooter himself has come out to clarify the issue.

It was confirmed that Ray Allen really had intentions for a comeback based on an interview with Dom Amore of Hartford Courant. His confirmation also provided some clues on where he is likely to end up.

"My decision is predicated on what is available," Allen said. "I said that I was interested because I never retired for a reason. I've been watching, seeing what teams have been doing and I've been waiting to see if the opportunity presented itself where I think I could fit."

Any veteran comeback is automatically tagged "title chase" in the rumor mill. The Golden State Warriors were the obvious destination for that (probably too obvious for its own good) and the team does not exactly list "shooters" as a priority of need.

There were Spurs rumors and even the LA Clippers because of Doc Rivers. Cleveland could also pop up because of LeBron James, but Allen has confirmed talks only with the Boston Celtics and Milwaukee Bucks, two of his former teams.

"I would love going back to those places if it worked out," Allen said, "because both teams are good, too. It doesn't necessarily have to be championship-or-bust for me to go back to the NBA. I want to be in a situation where I thought I could help, play a little bit and help where they have good young talent."

The last statement is good news for the Bucks, and based on what Allen said, they could probably end up as his most likely destination.

Allen is choosing carefully and his motivation is clear. He is in a position to choose a situation he likes and it's not dictated by money or a title. He is looking for a team which could benefit from what he can offer. The Bucks are big on length and athleticism (something Allen has lost as he's now 41 years old), but they need shooting and leadership. Ray Allen mentoring Jabari Parker and Khris Middleton could work wonders for Milwaukee.

SB Nation team site Brew Hoop pointed out that Allen could be a liability on the defensive end Allen would need other wing players to cover for him. Giannis Antetokounmpo could help in that regard. Another factor could be the coach. Brad Stevens is a brilliant young mind but Allen may prefer to work with Jason Kidd, a Team USA teammate.

It's difficult to assure a comeback since it would have been more practical to have done it in the last two seasons. But if ever Allen does decide to play again, the Milwaukee Bucks are the safest bet.
