Rio 2016 Olympics: Chinese Weightlifter Long Qingquan Makes World Record with 307Kg & Diver Wu Minxia Wins 5th Gold

Many TV viewers are now setting aside their usual favorite shows – either by choice or default when the station temporarily cancels regular programming – and airs its coverage of the ongoing Rio 2016 Olympic Games.

On the third day of the competition, Long Qingquan, a Chinese weightlifter, won the 56kg weightlifting gold medal by lifting 170kg in the jerk on Sunday. In the process, Long broke the world record total of 370kg, reported China Daily.

The silver medal went to South Korea’s Om Yun Chaol with his 303kg total and the bronze was awarded to Sinphet Kuraithong of Thailand.

On the same day, a female Chinese diver became the first athlete to win five diving gold medals, reported Olympic.org. She is Wu Minxia who broke the record held by American diver Greg Louganis and fellow Chinese diver Guo Jingjing.

She partnered with Shi Tingmao to win the women’s synchronized 3m springboard. The two divers got a total score of 345.60 points, a clear lead of 31.77 points from the Italian diving team of Tania Cagnotto and Francesca Dallape.

Since round 1, the Chinese team had been leading the points. With her Sunday win, Wu became the first diver to win four Olympic titles in one event, and the first athlete to harvest a total of seven diving medals. The 30-year-old diver is the oldest Olympic gold medal winner in women’s diving when she broke the record previous held by 28-year-old American diver Micki King which she won the gold in Munich 1972 in the synchronized 3M springboard.
