A man claiming to be "Dumb And Dumber" actor Jim Carrey made a special appearance at the televised ceremony of the 22nd Czech Lion Awards (Cesky lev), the Czech equivalent of the Oscars, in Prague's Rudolfinum on Feb. 21, Prague Post reported.

It turned out, however, that the man is not the real Carrey.

The Czech Lion Awards organizers had put on VIP red carpet treatment for the Carrey impersonator. They had been contacted by people claiming to represent Carrey saying that the Hollywood the actor was in the area and wanted to attend the awards ceremony. They requested to keep the invitation private until the "Truman Show" star's appearance for security reasons.

During his brief appearance at the glamorous event in Prague broadcast live on Czech television across the Czech Republic, the con man was allowed on stage and showered in golden confetti and greeted with applause from the audience.

After the show, the awards ceremony organizers were bombarded with messages from fans saying the man who appeared on the stage was not the real Carrey.

"We have become very likely the target of a very elaborate hoax. I'm so sorry," said film director Jan Sverak, who supervised the awards ceremony. Earlier, he and the organizers had insisted that the man who appeared was the real Carrey.

Lucie Vyborna, the host of the ceremony, had also insisted the man was real but also later on apologized for the mistake.

The Carrey impersonator is yet to be identified. While he came with a translator and his own security and underwent the awards ceremony preparations, he was not paid any money from the awards officials, Daily Mail reported.
