Hollywood actor Robert De Niro has slammed U.S. presidential candidate Donald Trump for his statements and even compared him to a character that he portrayed in the movie "Taxi Driver."

The veteran star was candid during an interview session at the Sarajevo Film Festival where he talked about the 1976 film "Taxi Driver," as well as the business mogul Trump. De Niro played the cab driver Travis Bickle who suffers from a mental illness. When the actor was asked to describe the mentally challenged character, he made mention of the said U.S. presidential candidate, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

De Niro indicated that Bickle and Trump share a few similar characteristics. The Hollywood legend also slammed the Republican presidential candidate over some of the statements that he made during his campaign. The actor stated that Trump has been saying "totally crazy" and "ridiculous" comments that the businessman should not have mentioned. He also hinted on Trump's "totally nuts" behavior.

The Hollywood star continued that the said presidential candidate has mostly been at the center of the media's focus since Trump started his campaign. However, the media's attention has shifted where some have taken noticed of the businessman's sometimes ridiculous and "insane" comments.

He then commented on the ending of the movie where Bickle continued his driving profession despite his mental illness.  De Niro labeled the said situation as ironic and shared how the story's ending has some relevance to current events. He explained that the movie's character was somehow "celebrated" when he resumed his cab driving work despite his crazy behavior. He compared Bickle to Trump whom he described as a person who "shouldn't be where he is," referring to the businessman's presidential campaign.

In other news, Trump has taken to Twitter on Sunday, Aug. 15, to post several messages that called out the publication New York Times, CBS News reported.

The said publication has recently released a report that tackled Trump's election campaign methods. He described the New York Times as a "failing" publication and claimed that some of the details that it mentioned in its report did not happen.

He also stated that the media has been remiss in properly covering his election campaign activities and rallies. Trump commented that the media has been protecting his rival, Hilary Clinton. He claimed that he would have already beaten Clinton by 20 percent if not for the media's unflattering coverage. Trump even described the media as disgusting and corrupt.
