WWE rumors: AJ Styles triumph opens doors to new storylines vs. John Cena

The WWE may be on the verge of setting yet another AJ Styles vs. John Cena with the heavyweight title on the line.

AJ Styles is the new WWE heavyweight champion following his low-blow maneuver to steal the belt from under the nose of Dean Ambrose. Moving forward, it could be a sigh of new storylines to come.

The main event hardly drew attention with most expecting Ambrose to remain as champion. Seeing however that Ambrose’s reign was going nowhere, the unexpected win may just spur a lot of new storylines moving forward, WWE.com reported.

Styles is likely to be in a rematch with Ambrose as early as WWE SmackDown though the feud is likely to go on until the next WWE pay-per-view. Moving past that, there is a chance that the creative team may go beyond that and rekindle an old flame involving John Cena.

Before the Styles vs. Ambrose storyline, the “Phenomenal One” was in a feud with the Cenation leader. Styles holds a 2-0 record over Cena who is now busy attending to the second season of “American Grit”, 411 Mania reported.

There is no timetable on how long Cena will be out but his return could churn up a more interesting clash with the heavyweight title on the line. Cena has all the reason to aim for the WWE championship since he is one shy of equaling the 16 titles that Ric Flair holds.

A return does not hint of another Cena title run. Styles is an accomplished figure in the wrestling scene though he still needs the help of the 39-year-old WWE star.

Cena can survive in the WWE even if he is not a champion, meaning another match with Styles may be more of storyline-related to jack up the ratings. So where does this leave Ambrose?

Since the brand split, the WWE tried to make things work with the Lunatic Fringe. They paired Ambrose with Dolph Ziggler which didn’t pan out and now with Styles. Eventually, Ambrose may be up against someone else, an adversary that has yet to be known.

Hence, expect Styles and Ambrose to go at it until Cena makes a return. Somewhere along the way, Ambrose will get a new rival on the SmackDown roster.
