Paramedics were called to treat several moviegoers who watched the cannibal movie “Raw” at a Midnight Madness screening. The paramedics treated some of the audience who passed out early Tuesday morning.
The film, shown at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), won the FIPRESCI Critics’ Prize at the Cannes Film Festival in May. At its world premiere, there was no incident of audience passing out after watching "Raw," according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Ryan Werner, in charge of the movie’s marketing on the ground at the TIFF, said the movie became too much for some viewers.
The must-see horror movie, a French-language film, is about a vegan college student, Justine, who slowly became a cannibal. Justine, played by Garance Marillier, turns to cannibalism after she went through a hazing ritual at school which involved blood and raw liver, reported Daily Mail.
Werner said the only time he saw a similar physical reaction to a movie was when “Antichrist” by Lars von Trier was shown.
After TIFF, “Raw,” directed by first-time filmmaker Julie Ducournau, would be shown next at the Fantastic Fest, Mayhem Film Festival, Celluloid Screams, Beyond Fest and Sitges Film Festival. She told IndieWire, “'I want to hear this particular audience reacting. I want to see where they will be reacting. I am very curious. It’s like being judged by my peers, because myself, I am a huge genre and horror buff.”
