UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor is well and good heading to UFC 205 which may set the stage for a lightweight title clash with reigning champion Eddie Alvarez. The historic event will take place on Nov. 12 in New York City, the first time since it was banned back in 1997.
The recent news comes from MMAFighting.com which bared that McGregor is unperturbed with previous reports that he is bothered by a leg injury. The injury is something he sustained at UFC 202, the pay-per-view that saw him get back at Nate Diaz.
McGregor was seen visibly limping after his triumph and such sparked concerns of seeing the Irishman compete on the main card of UFC 205. Dana White seemed apprehensive of booking McGregor with the injury a concern, ESPN reported.
The word out right now is that McGregor’s leg has healed which can only get better given the time allowance before UFC 205. The attention now shifts to the UFC on whether they would sanction a match pitting McGregor and Alvarez for the UFC lightweight title.
Alvarez previously taunted McGregor for a match on social media, a tempting offer considering McGregor had wanted to prove he was the best in the UFC at any weight class. He was originally set to face Rafael Dos Anjos at UFC 196 but the Brazilian fighter had to beg off due to a broken foot.
After the loss to Diaz in March, the Irishman evened the score with a majority decision last August. A rubber match was being teased though nothing has been made official.
The same thing holds true for a potential McGregor vs. Alvarez match as the UFC has yet to decide on whether to pit the two for UFC 202.
Also worth noting is prior to McGregor’s UFC 202 match, White mentioned McGregor needing to defend his UFC featherweight title next. His likely opponent would be Jose Aldo, the same fighter he defeated in just 13 seconds at UFC 194.
If not McGregor, Alvarez may end up defending his title against Khabib Nurmagomedov. The undefeated Dagestan wants a crack at the lightweight crown though Alvarez seems to have a preference to face McGregor.
