"The Punisher" is expected to be released in 2017 on Netflix.

The "Daredevil" spin-off series "The Punisher" has officially began filming, sources confirmed.

Jon Bernthal, who plays Frank Castle a.k.a The Punisher, was seen in New York earlier this week. The 40-year-old actor was working on the set of his "The Punisher," his own series following his debut in "Daredevil" Season 2. Just Jared posted photos of the star in a hoodie and sporting a full bear while on set.

According to ComicBook, the working title for the new Marvel series is "Crime." Netflix has kept most of the series' details under wraps, although there's a theory that the title is related to The Punisher's history.

It still uncertain what the spin-off series will be about. Interestingly, Bernthal previously stated that Frank hadn't fully become The Punisher when the character debuted in "Daredevil" Season 2, which opens up the possibility that he will transition into his full hero form in his own solo series.

With that said, "The Punisher" is expected to be an origin story instead of a continuation of his situation in "Daredevil" Season 2. Interestingly, Bernthal teased that Frank, in the series, will be "reeling from the loss of his family. He's driven by rage and is on a singular mission to find these people who took his family from him, and do it as brutally as possible."

Meanwhile, it was recently confirmed that British actor Ben Barnes (Prince Caspian in "Chronicles of Narnia") has been cast for a series-regular role in "The Punisher." Although details about his character are unclear, it is rumored that Barnes is going to play the villain, Bobby Saint. In the 2004 "The Punisher" film, the character brought to life by James Carpinello.

The series might also bring in The Punisher's sidekick, David Lieberman a.k.a Microchip.

"The Punisher" is expected to be released in 2017 on Netflix. Steven Lightfoot has been attached as the showrunner of the movie.

This is the sixth series order by Netflix as part of its collaboration with Marvel. In the meantime, "Luke Cage" has premiered on Netflix. "Iron Fist" and "The Defenders" will follow in the next months.
