Scotland started the tournament with a bang by crushing lowly squad Malta, 5-1, on the road at the National Stadium in Ta' Qali, the Mirror reported.

Hull City's Robert Snodgrass was the man of the match for head coach Gordon Strachan's side as he unleashed a hat trick to lead his team in the five-goal win.

The 29-year-old winger scored his first goal in the ninth minute of the match as he directed defender Grant Hanley's assist past the defense of Malta keeper Andrew Hogg.

The game was then leveled by Balzan striker Alfred Effiong four minutes later to 1-1, giving the hosts some confidence as the teams entered the halftime break tied.

However, Fulham striker Chris Martin began a flurry of goals in the second half by scoring in the 53rd minute.

Snodgrass then netted his second of the game with a penalty kick in the 61st minute following a red card on Malta defender Jonathan Caruana at the hour mark.

Two more goals from Steven Fletcher and Snodgrass completed the team's five-goal haul.

Meanwhile, Lithuania was held to a 2-2 draw with Slovenia at their home field of LFF Stadium in Vilnius also on Sep. 4, as per ESPN.

Head coach Edgaras Jankauskas' side netted the first two goals of the game, courtesy of team captain Fiodor Cernych and midfielder Vykintas Slivka in the first half, but the visitors pulled off their own two goals late in the second half to force the tie.

Scotland, currently ranked 44th in the world by FIFA, is a huge favorite to win over 117th-ranked Lithuania.
