D'Angelo Russell

The Los Angeles Lakers will open a new era in the franchise on Wednesday (10:30 p.m US EST), taking on the run-and-gunning Houston Rockets at Staples Center in Los Angeles, California.

Game Preview:

It's a brand new day and a whole new season for the young and promising Lakers. For the first time in 18 seasons, the Lakers will be playing without a guy named Kobe Bryant on its roster.

Leading the youth revolution for the Lakers is 20-year old point guard D'Angelo Russell. After a see-saw performance in his rookie year, Russell appears to be poised for a breakout year, if his stellar play in the preseason would be the basis.

The Lakers will also feature a mix of veterans and more promising talents. This year's no.2 overall pick Brandon Ingram has shown flashes of potential in the exhibition games, while Luol Deng and Timofey Mozgov will be instant contributors for a team that is looking to better their 17-win record last year.

The Rockets recorded more victories last season, though their 42-40 slate and a first-round playoff exit are considered disappointments for a team that had the materials for a deep run.

Nevertheless, the team's brain trusts are hopeful that new head coach Mike D'Antonio will give the franchise a new direction as they chase for that elusive NBA title. James Harden is still the star of this vaunted Rockets squad, which also added the service of three-point specialist Ryan Anderson, scorer Eric Gordon and veteran big man Nene Hilario.

Players to Watch:

Rockets Starting Lineup: James Harden, KJ McDaniels, Trevor Ariza, Ryan Anderson and Nene Hilario

Harden's fantasy worth is going to be more valuable this season, because he's going to be the primary ball handler for the Rockets. Expect the Beard to drop at least 20 points and 10 dimes per game, especially against this Lakers team which is still struggling defensively. Clint Capela is going to be a value pickup across all fantasy leagues due to his ability to rack up stats in limited playing time.

Lakers Starting Lineup: D'Angelo Russell, Lou Williams, Luol Deng, Julius Randle and Timofey Mozgov

Russell is projected to drop at least 20 points and hit three treys per game. That's going to be his M.O all season long. As far as value pick are concerned, Jordan Clarkson appears to be an ideal bet because he's going to be that firebrand for the Lakers second unit.

Prediction:

The Rockets are the clear favorites in this one, but don't overlook the Baby Lakers. Los Angeles might be young team, yet they have the firepower to blow any opponent away. The problem lies on their defense, and how well they can contain this explosive Rockets offense.  Predicted Score: Rockets 119, Lakers 100
