Kansas City-based EyeVerify announced Sunday that their technology of unlocking phones by the use of eyes will be put on millions of ZTE smartphones.

EyeVerify founder Toby Rush said that their Eyeprint ID technology recognizes the unique veins in a person's eye in a fraction of a second, allowing a password-free method.

"So all you need to do [is] look at your device and pick up and it's going to open," said Rush.

EyeVerify's biometric technology isn't widely available, but founder Toby Rush says phonemaker ZTE is building the technology into its new high-end Grand S3 model.

The enhanced ZTE Grand S3 is available for purchase online in China at 2,999 yuan.

At the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Rush said that the device will be shipped this March, and that other smartphone manufactures are going to move forward with their technology in the coming months.

The company also confirmed that their Eyeprint ID technology has been integrated into the AirWatch app SDK and the iOS-based AirWatch Chat, and will have further deployments later in the first quarter.

AirWatch General Manager John Marshall stated that the technology gives end users easy access to business-critical applications while allowing IT to maintain high levels of security for devices and corporate data.

According to AirWatch, the growing popularity of mobile devices in work also leads to greater amounts of sensitive data being transmitted digitally.

The company sees the use of biometrics as one of the most important security solutions to safeguard those data. Furthermore, biometrics also addresses exposure to digital threats as AirWatch is beginning to integrate IoT compatibility.
