Actors Austin Butler (L) and Vanessa Hudgens pose with adoptable puppies from The Shelter Pet Project during the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards at Microsoft Theater on August 30, 2015 in Los Angeles, California.

Rumors began swirling that Vanessa Hudgens and Austin Butler's relationship has hit a rocky patch. It is said that the two are on the verge of breaking up as "The Shannara Chronicles" star is not happy with the possible reunion of his girlfriend and Zac Efron in "High School Musical 4."

Talks about Hudgens and Efron's on-screen reunion started after Disney's President and Chief Creative Officer Gary Marsh announced that the next installment in the popular "High School Musical" franchise was being developed. Since then, many fans have been hoping to see the former couple reunite on-screen.

Reports claimed Hudgens had already agreed to work with Efron for "High School Musical 4: Wild and Knights." The two, who portrayed Gabriella Montez and Troy Bolton in the 2006 installment, will reportedly appear as mentors to the new class of wildcats.

While fans may be ecstatic about the said on-screen reunion, there is one person who is seemingly not very upbeat about it. Butler is rumored to be furious about the idea that Hudgens will come back to the franchise and share screen time with Efron.

Rumor has it that Butler does not trust Efron on the grounds that he keeps on calling Hudgens even though they did not end on good terms. The "Baywatch" actor is reportedly not over his ex-girlfriend and is still looking for an opportunity to work things out given that he will always be her first love.

It can be recalled that Efron and Hudgens' on-screen chemistry turned into a real life romance nearly two years after they worked on the first installment of the "High School Musical" series. In December 2010, the two called it quits on their relationship.

Neither Butler nor Hudgens has responded to the break-up rumors. Meanwhile, in early August, the "Gimme Shelter" actress gushes about her boyfriend during a sit-down interview with Beauty Coach.

"Honestly, I think my boyfriend," said Hudgens when asked who inspired her the most. "I am so lucky. I have never witnessed someone work harder on their craft and well being more than Austin does. He inspires me to be more knowledgeable in every aspect of life."

Hudgens and Butler's romance was introduced to the public in 2011 after the latter was seen leaving the former's house, Bustle reported. It is said the two met on the set of 2006's "High School Musical," where Butler was doing extra work on various TV series' at the time.
