Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes) and Saul Berenson (Mandy Patinkin) are going to show the viewers a new level of tension in the upcoming episode of the Showtime series "Homeland."

The whereabouts of Rupert Friend's Peter Quinn remains a big mystery in "Homeland" Season 6. Following his on and off relationship with Claire Danes' Carrie in the past season, will Quinn return to the CIA?

"Homeland" Season 6 will be primarily set in New York city, as confirmed by the show's executive producer Alex Gansa. The upcoming season takes place in the background of the US Presidential Election, starting with Election Day and leading up to the inauguration. Aside from the elections, the story will also show the continued effects of the 9/11 attacks on the United States.

Peter Quinn's fate in "Homeland" Season 5 finale remains murky. After falling into a coma after being exposed to the saran gas attack, Quinn is awakened so that Carrie and Saul (Mandy Patinkin) can extract information from him. However, the doctor's said that Quinn now has "minimal cognitive function."

After Quinn declared his love for Carrie through a letter, the latter considered suffocating Quinn with a pillow as a form of mercy killing. Moving forward with "Homeland" Season 6 spoilers, Showtime CEO David Nevins said if ever Quinn does survive "he wouldn't likely go back to being a badass assassin," Collider quoted.

In a report by EW, Quinn is still a series regular in the "Homeland" Season 6 cast, but the character is going to be "dramatized." The character will be a changed man and unlike what he was when viewers first met him.

In "Homeland" Season 6, Quinn will represent a "profound and familiar casualty of the war on terror." The things he will have to endure in the new season will be different from what he had to go through in the past. Moreover, his daily life is intertwined with his relationship with Carrie.

As to whether he and Carrie would get back together or not, Gansa said that "because they're both very damaged people and I think that they have a similar attraction to high voltage, high adrenaline situations that tend to have an incredible benefit but more likely to have a very catastrophic end."

"Homeland" Season 6 will return to Showtime on Jan. 15, 2017.
