Starbucks, Niantic brewing big 'Pokémon GO' Christmas event to include Gen 2 Pokémon?

'Pokemon Go' players meet at Sydney Opera House on July 20, 2016 in Sydney, Australia.

Niantic's "Pokémon GO" mobile AR game is not as interesting as it was to players before but a new deal aims to fix that. The developer and Starbucks could be brewing something new.

Besides a new limited edition drink, Starbucks and Niantic will also reportedly bring the Gen 2 Pokémon in the game. The Christmas event and the new marketing promotion may be blended into one which is expected to launch in Dec. 8.

Data miners have claimed that the recent "Pokémon GO" updates contained lines of codes that refer to bonuses at certain Pokestops. The proof was seen in the form of supposedly leaked internal memos from Starbucks employees themselves regarding the Starbucks and Niantic partnership for "Pokémon GO," The Next Web reported.

Players would be able to rest at Starbucks which will be turned into Pokestops. It is not known whether the decision would be permanent or for a limited time only. The new "Pokémon GO" Frappuccino will be available only while supplies last.

Starbucks branches in the United States will be turned into Pokestops but not all of them due to some obvious technical reasons. It is also unknown whether the U.S. will be the only country to experience the supposed promotion.

The leaked document also hints at expanding the world of the game. "Pokémon GO" could finally see the introduction of Gen 2 Pokémon along with the Starbucks promotion, Forbes reported. Previous rumors claim that there could be about 100 new Gen 2 Pokémon that will be catchable.

"Pokémon GO" has peaked several months ago and player interest is quickly dropping. Most of the veteran players have caught most of the available Pokémon and the causal players have simply gotten tired playing with competitive people.

Starbucks and Niantic's supposed promotion could bring back some of the interest in "Pokémon GO." It might not last long but it would give the developers more time to think of another gimmick in the future.
