Illumination Entertainment and Universal Pictures have released the first teaser trailer for "Despicable Me 3." The short teaser primarily focuses on introducing the new villain, Balthazar Bratt, who is voiced by "South Park" co-creator Trey Parker.
The trailer starts out showcasing Gru (Steve Carell) along with his new wife and fellow Anti-Villain League agent, Lucy (Kristen Wiig). Gru is shown still being a little mean and villainous as he knocks someone off the road but when Balthazar Bratt starts causing trouble he and Lucy do heed the call to stop him.
According to Entertainment Weekly, Bratt was a former child star and is somewhat stuck with the culture of the time period he was famous in. This is evident in his fashion sense and because his weapons include a mix tape, a Rubik's cube and he is shown moonwalking towards the ship.
Bratt is described as the only villain with a bad sense of fashion and is shown stealing an entire ship using bubblegum that inflates to the point where it can lift the ship off the waters. Gru attempts to stop him but discovers he isn't armed with any weapon except for a small water gun.
Gru's yellow assistants, collectively known as the Minions, are shown in only a short clip in the trailer. Gru's adopted daughters, Margo (Miranda Cosgrove), Edith (Dana Gaier) and Agnes (Nev Scharrel) are completely absent from the film.
The film will also introduce Gru's long-lost twin brother, Dru, who will also be voiced by Steve Carell. Unfortunately, Dru is not yet shown in the trailer.
It will be directed by Pierre Coffin, Kyle Balda and Eric Guillon, the Hollywood Reporter stated. Coffin is known for co-directing the first film in the trilogy and Balda directed the "Minions" spin-off film. Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio, writers of the first two instalments, have penned the script.
"Despicable Me 3" will release on June 30, 2017.
