Comic book writer Robert Kirkman attends SiriusXM's Entertainment Weekly Radio Channel Broadcasts From Comic-Con 2016 on July 21, 2016 in San Diego, California.

The midseason finale of "The Walking Dead" Season 7 featured several exciting and intriguing scenes such as Daryl's (Norman Reedus) escape and his reunion with Rick (Andrew Lincoln), including a glimpse at a mysterious figure watching Alexandria. Story speculations hinted that the said mystery character could be part of the Whisperers who is set to join the AMC series' zombie apocalyptic world.

Several scenes from "The Walking Dead" Season 7 midseason finale showed a hooded and booted figure closely monitoring the Alexandria community. The mystery person even observed Rick and Aaron's (Ross Marquand) attempts to get ammunition supplies from a boat adrift in the middle of a zombie-filled lake.

Without any clue to the mysterious figure's identity, fans of the AMC series came up with various theories that hinted of future events as indicated in Robert Kirkman's comic books. One of the speculations stated that the said character may be Dwight (Austin Amelio) who is trying to keep a close eye on Rick and his friends' activities, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

In "The Walking Dead" comic books, Dwight is set to betray Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) and join forces with Rick to defeat the Saviors. Wearing a hood to hide his identity from Alexandrian residents, Dwight may be waiting for signs of Rick's impending rebellion against Negan.

Other character speculations also indicated that the mystery figure could be a member of the villainous Whisperers. In Kirkman's comic books, members of the said group wear zombie flesh to help them move among the walkers without being detected.

Some fans may argue that it may too early in the AMC series' events to introduce the Whisperers to "The Walking Dead." However, Kirkman shared in an earlier interview with Comic Book that the said villains may appear in the TV series earlier than indicated in the comic books. He stated, "It's not impossible that the Whisperers could come along or aspects of them could come along earlier than the timeline of the book."

At this time, it is still unclear whether the mystery person is part of a new threat that Rick and his friends will soon face in the AMC series. Kirkman mentioned that the said character will play a big role in the show's upcoming episodes.

"The Walking Dead" Season 7 will return to the small screens in February 2017. Watch a teaser clip from the upcoming midseason premiere below:
