Asian Television Awards 2016: 'Descendants of the Sun' wins; Alden Richards joins Adrian Pang, Baki Zainal, Stephanie Carrington as hosts

Singapore comedian and actor Adrian Pang lifts a model of the Asian Television Awards trophy after the 2006 gala event at the Suntec Singapore International Convention & Exhibition Centre on November 30, 2006 in Singapore.

The Asian Television Awards 2016 gave a total of 46 awards in a two-day event. Held on Dec. 1 and 2, the event honored the best TV works and production in Asia and gathered together regional partners and stars.

Korean drama series "Descendants of the Sun" won the Best Drama Series award. Mnet Asian Music Awards, which was held on the same night this year, was named the Best Entertainment (One-Off/Annual).

Taiwanese drama "A Touch of Green" bagged five awards including the highly competitive Best Actress in a Leading Role and Best Actress in a Supporting Role. Winning Terrestrial Channel of the Year is its broadcaster, Public Television Service Foundation.

Chen Kun Chang surprised everyone when he won the Best Actor in a Leading Role award for his work in "The Taste of Dang-Liang's Family." He beat crowd favorite Christopher Lee of Singaporean musical drama "Crescendo."

Radio and Television Shanghai-produced "The Tokyo Trials" won Best Documentary Series. The series which aired in 2015 is produced by a female group who were once honored by American Emmy Awards, according to China.org.cn. Meanwhile, Lifetime Asia's cooking show "MasterChef Asia" won Best Adaptation of an Existing Format.

The 21st Asian TV Awards was held in Suntec Singapore Convention and Exhibition Center on Dec. 2. Eighteen awards, as detailed on the award-giving body's official websitewere given on a trade dinner held on Dec. 1 while the rest were given the following day.

The weekend of fun was hosted by Singaporean actor Adrian Pang, Filipino actor Alden Richards, Malaysian TV presenter and radio host Baki Zainal and Singapore model and actress Stephanie Carrington. The four hosts made the night more entertaining when they bickered among themselves. Zainal won the crowd over with his ability to speak more than three languages and by attempting to chat with the ladies.

Since its launch in 1996, the Asian TV Awards is the most celebrated and significant event of the Asian TV industry as it recognizes excellence in production, performance and programming. Among the performers who graced the event this year were British singer Charli XCX, South Korean rapper Amber Liu of f(x) and Singapore's pride JJ Lin.
