Apple will be selling its most expensive Apple Smartwatch Edition for a staggering $10,000, which is the usual cost for luxury items.

The device was previously rumored to cost about $5,000 due to its 18-karat gold casing. Several Internet users have been arguing  whether the super expensive Apple Watch is viable as a family heirloom or not, according to Mashable.

The usual family heirlooms passed on are antique luxury items such as gold watches, necklaces, rings or jewelry in general. The Apple Watch is being considered by many as jewelry despite its main feature as a wearable tech device.

The technological aspect of the Apple Watch is also a factor that needs to be considered when treating it as a family heirloom. Luxury items that get passed throughout a family's generation get more value as it gets older, wherein the Apple Watch's value goes down because the technology behind it evolves.

To put into perspective, the bulky type mobile phone Motorola Dynatac in 1982 cost almost $4,000, smartphones today that are better and more advanced costs only around $200 up to $600.

The Apple Watch could still be passed down to the next generation of up to 15 years, but with the rapid progression of technology such as from the bulky plasma screens to today's flat Retina display, gadgets will lose value fast.

However, Apple Inc's business lies in its tech gadgets and devices, but some loyal fans still have the company's oldest products such as the first gen iPhone and the black and white Macintosh computer, which is most likely useless in today's standards for computing.

"A 10k Rolex, etc, can be handed down as a family heirloom and still function. A 10k Apple Watch will be outdated in a year or two," Twitter user Wade Fulp posted on the microblogging site.

Other netizens have said that Apple should have increased the battery's life, while one user joked about today's Apple Watch not being able to sync with the "iPhone 28."

Meanwhile, the cheapest of Apple's new wearable devices is the Apple Watch Sport at $350. The version is targeted at athletes, , according to NY Times.  Its bigger version has a price tag of $400
