China confirms military exercises in the South China Sea.

For the first time, China confirmed conducting military exercises by its carrier in the South China Sea.

According to a statement released by the Chinese Defense Ministry, several J-15 fighter jets were on the flight deck of the aircraft carrier Liaoning on Monday.

Taiwan's Defense Ministry confirmed days after and said the carrier and five other warships had passed south of Taiwan.

The Chinese Navy said that the drills were part of a routine open-sea exercise. The Navy said that these could add to tensions between Beijing and Taipei.

In the Philippines, Russia's Pacific Fleet conducted a five-day visit to the country led by Rear Admiral Eduard Mikhailov. The Russian naval leader offered to hold joint military exercises with the Southeast Asian country.

"You can choose to cooperate with the United States of America or to cooperate with Russia," Mikhailov said.

He added: "But from our side, we can help you in every way that you need. We are sure that in the future we'll have exercises with you. Maybe just maneuvering or maybe the use of combat systems and so on."

"We have an experience in fighting these [threats]," Mr. Mikhailov said. "We will share to [sic] our knowledge on these problems, how to solve piracy and terrorism."

Philippine President Duterte stated that the Philippines is welcoming partnerships with China and Russia.

During President Duterte's visit to China, he said, "In this venue, I announce my separation from the United States."

He added that he has "realigned" himself with China's ideological flow.

"I will tell him that there are three of us against the world: China, Philippines, and Russia. It's the only way," said President Duterte.
