AMD Ryzen release date revealed by GDC, new chip faster than Intel Broadwell-E processor

AMD's Ryzen and Vega system is demonstrated at CES 2017.

AMD Ryzen is set to launch in a couple of weeks with the information coming from a leaked Game Developer Conference listing. The new processor lineup is expected to be released around March.

Intel will see a hard competitor with the AMD Ryzen processors seeing as their demonstrations have repeatedly beat the former's chips. AMD demonstrated the new chips during their New Horizons live stream which put an octa-core Ryzen chip against an octa-core Broadwell-E chip from Intel.

Both were used to transcode a short video clip with an output for Apple TV 3 using the Handbrake program which is known for its heavy workload scale across all of the active cores. AMD's Ryzen was able to transcode the video in just 54 seconds while the Intel chip took 59 seconds to finish, Ars Technica has learned.

Another interesting detail about the benchmark is that Ryzen's frequency was locked at 3.4GHz. Intel's Broadwell-E chip was boosted to 3.7GHz which means that Ryzen is still able to churn out more if it was unleashed.

The platform would be a wise choice for budget PC builders considering that the AM4 platform is expected to last at least until 2020. AMD's X370 will be the best bet for high-end systems with its dual-channel DDR4 support plus NVIDIA SLI and Radeon Crossfire capabilities.

AMD Ryzen is expected to be launched around March thanks to a slip-up by the GDC organizers, Anand Tech reported. Details for a talk regarding the AMD Ryzen CPU included a phrase saying "recently-launched" which means that the processors will be released by then.

GDC 2017 will start from Feb. 27 up to March 3 and AMD is expected to launch the new processors before or within the range. All of the AMD Ryzen specs and price should be revealed by then as all of the processors in the line will be launched in one go.
