Asus’ recently-launched ZenFone AR could give some hints on what to expect on the upcoming ZenFone 4 series.

Taiwanese smartphone manufacturer Asus is preparing its next-generation of smartphone, the rumored ZenFone 4, this coming May, according to reports.

The latest information on the ZenFone 4 smartphone comes from Taiwan's handset supply chain, implying that the upcoming "ZenFone 4 family products will come with hardware specifications higher than those of its prevailing ZenFone 3 products and higher ASPs," Digitimes noted.

Additional reports have revealed that the ZenFone 4 series offers several improvements as compared to the ZenFone 3 lineup, which should expect a higher selling price to the prevailing units.

Although the information about the ZenFone 4 is scarce online, the tech market could divulge on the specs and features of Asus' recently-launched ZenFone AR to gain some hints about the upcoming ZenFone 4 series.

Announced in the recently-concluded CES 2017, the ZenFone AR is the high-end version of the ZenFone 3 line-up. The smartphone is powered by a Snapdragon 821 processor and a hefty 8GB of RAM. Outside, the Zenfone AR brings a 5.7-inch Super AMOLED screen with a resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels.

On another note, Digital Trends reported an Asus device that was spotted on China's regulatory board website TENAA this January. The device is to be released in the mid-range market segment of the ZenFone 4 lineup, bearing the model number X00GD.

The said Asus smartphone features a 5.2-inch full HD display with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels, as per TENAA listing. The said ZenFone 4 smartphone may also be fueled by an octa-core processor, clocked at 1.5 GHz. Its internal memory may pack a 2GB of RAM or 4GB of RAM. The device is also said to sport a 13-megapixel primary camera, and will house a hefty 4,850mAh battery.

According to previous reports, Asus shipped 17.5 million ZenFone series smartphones in the year 2016, which is less than the 20.5 million products shipped in 2015. However, the tech maker plans to boost its profit as it aims to launch new smartphones for the first half of 2017, with the ZenFone 3 Zoom slated for February and the ZenFone AR device to be launched in the second quarter.
