The highest placement of a Miss Denmark candidate happened in 1963 when Aino Korva, who finished first runner-up to Ieda Maria Vargas of Brazil. Recently, Christina Mikkelsen was not able to break the record as she did not place at Miss Universe 2016.
Before Miss Universe 2016, Mikkelsen was asked about the person who inspired her as a beauty queen in an interview with Daily Premiere. She told the publication that she has always been into the whole pageant world and specified Korva as the person who inspired her to take the chance.
"She is the only Dane who has placed in top 5 at Miss Universe, Mikkelsen said. "With her help and guidance, maybe I can do the same or even better."
About Mikkelsen's love life, she is said to be dating Equatorial Guinea vice president Teodoro Nguema Obiang, 43. The latter, who is the son of Equatorial Guinea president Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, also reportedly once wooed rapper and actress Eve Jihan Jeffers-Cooper.
On Jan. 18, Mikkelsen was one of the Miss Universe 2016 candidates who joined the dinner party at Cordillera Convention Hall, Baguio Country Club, in Baguio City. Hosted by Miss Universe 2011 third runner-up Shamcey Supsup, the event was attended by Wurtzbach, Miss Universe Organization president Paula Shugart and Miss Universe 2016 host committee chairman Chavit Singson.
On Jan. 30, Monday, Wurtzbach crowned Miss France Iris Mittenaere as her successor at the Mall of Asia Arena, Pasay, Metro Manila, Philippines. Miss Haiti Raquel Pelissier was first runner-up while Miss Colombia Andrea Tovar was second runner-up.
Miss Universe 1994 Sushmita Sen gave a message to Mittenaere, who won her crown in the Philippines like her. The Indian beauty queen told the GMA News. "If you win in the Philippines, you will have the love of the Philippines for all your life."
