Mother's Pancake

Authorities at the Nanjing Lukou International Airport allowed a male passenger on Thursday returning back to the city from the Spring Festival holiday to handcarry 15 kilograms of pancake made by his mother.

The man’s luggage exceeded the baggage allowance allocated to passengers. Also contributing to the man’s excess luggage weight, besides the pancakes, are some pickled vegetables that his mother also made for him, Shanghaiist reported.

Unaware of Luggage Contents

The man was unaware of what his mother packed in his suitcase until he checked in his luggage at the airport. The incident became viral as the photos of the stacks of pancake were posted on Sina Weibo. The hashtag #suitcasespackedwithlove# became trending in Chinese social media with almost 6,600 people joining the discussion and the posts read more than 23 million times, ECNS reported.

Before the start of the Lunar New Year, a Chinese woman bound for Sichuan Province ate two large durian fruits that she was disallowed from bringing inside the train in Chengdu because of the fruit’s pungent odor. The woman, who shared some of the durian with other train passengers, ate the bulk of the fruit until her nose bled.

Too Much Pancakes not Good for Breakfast

The male passenger’s excess luggage weight would eventually be translated into weight gain since pancakes, when mixed with maple syrup, is one of the six breakfast fare considered unhealthy for people who want to lose weight. Care2 explained that because pancakes use refined flour as main ingredient, it is linked to inflammation and insulin insensitivity.

Other foods considered unhealthy for breakfast are fruit juice because of its high sugar content, boxed cereals which have artificial sweeteners or sugar, and bread and margarine since it is loaded with calories, sugar and trans fat. Also on the list are donuts and non-fat yogurt.

The proposed alternatives by Care2 are plain Greek yogurt, Chia seeds, oatmeal, fruit, eggs and coffee.
