Honor 8 news & updates: Mid-range Huawei smartphone gets Nougat, EMUI 5

The Huawei Honor 8 smartphone is getting Nougat and EMUI 5 in an update rolled out on Feb. 11

Huawei Honor reported that Android Nougat and EMUI 5 were rolled out to the Honor 8 on Feb. 11, Saturday. It is big news for owners of the Chinese tech giant's mid-range smartphone. The Huawei Honor 8 was launched in China in July 2016 and is compatible with AT&T and T-Mobile in the United States.

Honor's official Twitter account reported the news. The tweet from the US subsidiary of the Chinese company pointed out that the update would include an app "drawer" or "tray" that collects all the apps installed on the device.

Android Nougat should revitalize the phone launched half a year ago and shipped with Android 6.0 Marshmallow.  EMUI 5 might also solve problems some owners of the smartphone have had.

EMUI is jumping from v4.1 to v5, according to Android Police. This is a big move but the general belief on the web is that the handset manufacturer is making the right changes.

Honor had announced earlier that the Nougat update for the Honor 8 would be launched on Feb. 10, Friday. Huawei then confirmed that the OS update would roll out one day later.

Like most over-the-air (OTA) roll-outs it could take a while for the update to reach owners of the Huawei smart phone. They should be ready for that. It is believed all Honor 8 units sold in the US will receive the update by the end of this month.

Honor is a sub-brand of Huawei that was established in 2013. It has helped Huawei to compete well with other budget brands in China. The company started rolling out the phones to other countries in 2014.
