Although not entirely accepted in the society, marijuana use continues proliferates due to its alleged beneficial effects. However, marijuana users may soon find themselves in conflict with the law as the White House aims to strengthen crackdown.

The legal selling of marijuana reached up to $6.7 billion last year under the guise of medical cannabis. However, despite the regularization of some state, other state remains to be plagued by recreation weed problem. The proliferation of such activity has been widely attributed to the beliefs of individuals concerning the unexplored and unsubstantiated health benefits of cannabis to its users.

One of the assumed benefits of marijuana to its user is weight loss. Many claimed to have lost significant weight after continuous use of the said substance, even without the advice of medical experts. The said effect has been attributed to the ability of marijuana to help the body manage its intake of calories more efficiently, according to India.

Moreover, another study claimed that cannabis might also help in treating depression. The assumption has been based on the observation that most marijuana smokers have less depressive symptoms as compared to non-smokers.

However, most of the claimed health benefits are yet to be widely recognized by the mainstream science. Aside from the lack of recognition, recent events suggest that marijuana use may be linked to a different type of drug, known as opioids.

"I think that when you see something like the opioid addiction crisis blossoming in so many states around this country, the last thing that we should be doing is encouraging people," CNN quoted White House press secretary Sean Spicer as saying. "There's still a federal law that we need to abide by when it comes to recreational use marijuana and other drugs of that nature."

Although the allegations may sound reasonable, some critics still believed that further studies should be made to cement the claim. Other factors apart from recreational marijuana use could have provoked the urge for opioids.
