Winemaker, singer and writer Maynard James Keenan published his biography, A Perfect Union of Contrary Things," with author and childhood friend Sarah Jensen. Tool singer revealed that they talked about things that would less like to irritate someone.
Keenan spoke with Noisey about the book. Keenan is known to be private about his life and he is asked if it was challenge to write the biography.
"Yeah. I think that there's a weird ... I don't know if weird is the right word for it. There's an imbalance with celebrity worship, I think. It will probably take a couple of scholars to kind of trace whatever that is and however that works," Keenan said.
He added that for the work to speak for itself, one has to remove the celebrity personality to an extent.
"I feel like, in order to kind of just let your work speak for itself, you kind of have to remove a little bit of the celebrity personality. You can still be an asshole. You can still be a kind person. You can still be all of those things behind the scenes, as an artist. If you let the personality part run it, then whatever you're getting done is compromised, I feel."
He also talked about Sarah Jensen, the co-author of the book. He said that Jensen and he grew up together and went to the same high school. The singer said that Jensen has a fair idea where they started.
"She has an idea of all of those things, having experienced the setting of where we both grow up and knowing where we're from. That's a grounding experience in and of itself as far as a writer's perspective," Keenan mentioned.
