Reading Pavilion Becomes Popular in Shanghai

People wait in line for a reading pavilion at Knowledge Square in front of Shanghai Library on March 5, 2017.

CCTV program "Readers" has kindled a new trend among Chinese: reading aloud in booths.

A pavilion at Shanghai Library receives hundreds of readers, who have to wait more than 9 hours in line for their turn. They have 3 minutes to record themselves reading aloud their chosen literature.

"There is an old photo in the late 1970s capturing people lining up outside the Shanghai Library before it opens. If that was a spring of reading in Shanghai, now I think another spring has arrived again," library curator Zhou Deming told the Shanghai-based The Paper.

To accommodate more readers, Shanghai will be setting up more pavilions in the coming months.
