After years of publicly feuding, Chinese comedian Chu Ke-liang reconciled with his daughter, singer Jeannie Hsieh. The two Taiwanese celebrities issued a joint statement on Tuesday to announce the end to their feud.
The father, an entertainment giant, is terminally sick. The feud was caused by his abandoning Jeannie and another daughter when the two almost died in a vehicular accident. By the middle of the 1990s, Chu Ke-liang hid from his family because he had a large debt caused by gambling. The incident made Jeannie Hsieh cut their ties permanently.
Resumes Career
In 2009, the comedian came out of hiding and resumed his career. He publicly asked his daughter for a reconciliation. She agreed if the reunion would be private as a sign of respect for her mother. According to Taiwan News, the 42-year-old Jeannie Hsieh is his second daughter from a second marriage. The 70-year-old comedian has five children, three daughters and two sons, from four marriages.
However, the feud resumed after Chu Ke-liang condemned his daughter publicly for sharing details of their feud in 2016 during her farewell concert in Taipei Arena. Among the details she shared is her father’s request for the mother and a mistress to share one house.
Second Reconciliation
On Wednesday, the two again reconciled, apologized to each other and issued the statement to correct a rumor that Chu Ke-liang, who shared in 2014 that he has stage-2 colon cancer, has died. He rejected having surgery but instead opted to be treated using traditional Chinese medicine. In September, he underwent surgery at the National Taiwan University hospital.
Last week, his physical health worsened which likely triggered the internet rumor. He had a brief recovery in early 2017 that the comedian even went on a tour to promote “Hanky Panky,” his latest movie. Chu Ke-liang is conscious and stable, but is confined to his home. China Post reported that he continues to be funny when communicating with his doctors and visitors.
