‘Justice League’ plot: Will Superman’s mom and Aquaman’s mom have a mother moment in the film?

Jason Momoa will join Henry Cavill as one of the DC characters to have his own film with 'Aquaman' set to be released in 2018.

In the DC Comics, the mothers of superheroes play a vital role in the story and the development of the characters. As a matter of fact, Bruce Wayne's longing for his mother, Martha, was one of the core conflicts in "Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice." With more superheroes making their big screen debut in the DC Extended Universe, viewers will also be introduced to more mothers and mother figures.

So far, DCEU introduced Diana Lane as Martha Kent and Lauren Cohan as Martha Wayne. Now, it has been confirmed that Nicole Kidman is playing Aquaman's mom, Atlanna, in the upcoming "Aquaman" movie. In a recent interview, Lane revealed she wants to share a mother moment with Kidman.

"I want a scene with Nicole, that's what I really want. Perhaps in another [sequel]!" Lane said, as quoted by Comicbook. Although it makes for a really exciting moment for the two renowned actresses, the odds appear stacked against their meeting.

In the comic books, Atlanna has a tragic fate. However, granting that she lives long enough to appear in several movies in the DCEU, it is also logistically unlikely for Atlanna and Martha to bump into each other since the former spends most of her time under the sea in Atlantis while the latter is in land-locked Kansas.

According to Movie Pilot, "Aquaman" director James Wan revealed that most of the scenes in the movie will be set underwater. Wan said that the movie will explore the "scary world" of the deep sea as well as to "explore the wondrous world of Atlantis."

It basically shows that Atlanna and Martha will be worlds apart in the franchise. While the role of the mothers in "Justice League" hasn't been revealed yet, it was teased that Lane would be playing a small but important role.

If Atlanna and Martha really do meet each other in the DCEU, it would be interesting to see their interaction. After all, Atlanna is a goddess while Martha is a mere mortal. Certainly, their topic of discussion would not be limited to how they raised their respective sons.

In the meantime, Atlanna's and Martha's sons, Aquaman and Superman respectively, will come together in "Justice League," which will be out in theaters in November.
