The 2021 American Music Awards were long-awaited by fans looking forward to the first live performance of BTS since 2020.
The 2021 American Music Awards, which took place on Sunday, November 21, were a celestial event for fans of BTS and Coldplay worldwide. The K-pop idols and rockstars joined on stage for the very first live performance of their superhit collaboration "My Universe".
American rapper Cardi B introduced the act by saying that she know that the crowd was about to go crazy and to hold on as the next performance was about to be huge. She added that they have the biggest fans in the world, and to give it up for Coldplay and BTS who were performing for the first time.
Although the BTS septet, including V, RM, Jungkook, J-Hope, Jimin, Jin, and Suga did not do a signature choreographed dance routine, as they generally do during live performances, they grooved to the song and interacted with the enthusiastic, cheering fans in the crowd throughout the performance.
Coldplay had added a special part at the end of the song especially for BTS to enjoy a dance break, and the artists joined in a dance party of sorts as pyrotechnics took off behind them on the stage. The two huge star bands said their thanks and blew kisses to the camera at the end of the act, while members of BTS hugged Chris Martin, the frontman of Coldplay.
Incidentally, this performance was a long-awaited and highly-anticipated one by BTS's fandom, the ARMY. It is because this was the Bangtan Boys' first public, live performance since 2020.
Earlier on the 2021 AMA red carpet, the South-Korean septet got candid about their experience on collaborating with Chris Martin and Coldplay for "My Universe". They spoke about how creating the song with Coldplay felt so organic for them and that Chris Martin expressed this song as a gift for BTS, traveling to Seoul to record it together.
The night was truly a historical one for the K-pop idols as they also won the "Artist of the Year" award, becoming the first Asian artist to bag the ceremony's biggest award. BTS took home another two awards, winning a total of three.
The 2021 AMAs, which took place at Los Angeles's Microsoft Theatre, also show spectacular performances by New Edition with New Kids on the Block, Bad Bunny with Tainy and Julieta Venegas, Tyler, Olivia Rodrigo, Tyler, the Creator, Diplo, Kane Brown, Carrie Underwood and Jason Aldean, Bruno Mars, and Jennifer Lopez among many other.
