A shooting on a South Carolina beach during a high school senior skip day left six people injured, according to authorities.
Police Chief Kevin Cornett reported that the incident occurred around 5:20 p.m. local time on Friday when gunfire broke out among hundreds of people gathered at Isle of Palms beach. The shooting followed several altercations among individuals participating in the senior skip day event.
Five of the injured individuals were approximately 18 years old, while one adult woman in her mid-30s or early 40s also sustained injuries. All injuries were non-life threatening, and the victims are receiving treatment at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC), as confirmed by city officials.
In the aftermath of the shooting, police detained several individuals on weapons charges for questioning. WCSC reported on Saturday that 18-year-old Shawn Alexander Martin-Goods was arrested and charged with unlawful carrying of a weapon. Additionally, a juvenile was arrested, but their name has not been released. Police have not confirmed whether the two arrested individuals were involved in the shooting.
Cornett also stated that multiple firearms were found on the beach, but it remains unclear if they were used in the shooting.
