Independence Day 2

Sci-fi film "Independence Day" is currently updating its cast and "Star Trek" actor Brent Spiner and Joey King have decided to join the cast of the upcoming film.

Film helmer Roland Emmerich confirmed the inclusion of the actors in a Twitter post saying, "This just in... @JoeyKingActress and @BrentSpiner officially signed for #IndependenceDay - Welcome aboard!"

Spiner also posted on Twitter, saying "Never release me," which suggests his enthusiasm with the science-fiction franchise.

Born in Houston, Texas, Spiner is also known for his roles in "Star Trek" movies prior to landing his role Dr. Brakish Okun in "Independence Day" in 1996. He has also appeared in a variety of television shows after "Independence Day," such as "Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H.," "Star Wars Rebels," and "Comedy Bang! Bang!" Fans will also get to see him in his other project this year in a film entitled "The Midnight Man."

On the other hand, King was not born when Emmerich's "Independent Day" first launched. The young actress' role is unknown yet, as per Empire Online.

King is known for her roles in films including "Crazy, Stupid, Love," "Oz the Great and Powerful," "White House Down," and "The Conjuring." Aside from Emmerich's sci-fi film, the young star is set to appear in several movies this year like "Zeroville," "Borealis," "Lockhead," and "Stone Wall."

Emmerich's 1996 "Independence Day" centered on aliens coming to the earth to invade and destroy it. With man defending the planet, their best weapon is the will to live.

The details on the story plot for the sequel are still unveiled at this point. However, the fans can expect that aliens may return to the planet for another alien-human face-off.

Emmerich revealed that humans are aware that the aliens would return to earth, as per Entertainment Weekly. He added that humans know that the way one can travel in space is through wormholes, which could take two to three weeks. That span of time is equivalent to 20 to 25 years for humans.

With the aliens destroying earth in the 1996 film, Emmerich also teased that aliens also do "different things."

Aside from Spiner and King, the film will also star returning cast Jeff Goldblum as David Levinson, Vivica Fox as Jasmine Dubrow, Bill Pullman as Thomas Whitmore, along with Travis Tope, Jessie Usher, Liam Hemsworth, and Charlotte Gainsbourg as new comers. Usher will play the son of Captain Steven Hiller, originally played by Will Smith, who is not returning as of now. Hemsworth will be playing Whitmore's son-in-law.

Directed by Emmerich, the film is co-produced by Dean Devlin, Ute Emmerich, Volker Engel, Harald Kloser, Carsten Lorenz, and Marc Weigert. Carter Blanchard, James Woods, and Nicolas Wright are in charge of penning the screenplay.

"Independence Day 2" is slated to premiere in theaters in the United States on June 24, 2016.
