Tom Hanks to star in third Dan Brown franchise movie "Inferno"

Hollywood heartthrob Tom Hanks is set to chase down more clues and secret codes as he reprises his role as Robert Langdon in the on-screen version of Dan Brown's best seller "Inferno."

Production is to get underway in Italy this month with many of the film's scenes being filmed in Florence.

Set against the picturesque backdrop of the city's famed piazzas and buildings, principal photography for the movie has already begun this week.

The "Captain Philips" star told Reuters during a photo call for the movie that he enjoyed the aspects of predictability and mystery contained in the story line.

The movie, "Inferno" will follow close on the heels of the previous  Dan Brown religious mystery novels that have made it to Hollywood's big screen.

The movie will be the third instalment of the franchise.

The book which stems from the Italian poet Dante Alighieri's masterpiece, will see Hanks' character in a chase for clues, to ultimately save the human race from an artificial plague.

Playing alongside Hanks will be "The Theory Of Everything" star Felicity Jones.

Ron Howard who is onboard for the film was also involved in the directing of the previous two movies in the franchise.

Including  the "The Da Vinci Code" and the second installment being "Angels and Demons." Both movies featured Hanks's character, Robert Langdon.

The third instalment of the film franchise has weathered some stormy seas as a Telegraph report suggests the decision to adapt the book "Inferno" for screen followed a dispute.

Brown's third book in his Langdon series adventures was "The Lost Symbol." In 2012, it was reported that Danny Strong the Emmy-winning writer would adapt this novel for a screenplay but Ron Howard refused to direct the film and little has been known about the project.
