Nintendo has got big plans for the E3 this year, but the most anticipated of all is the return of the world gaming championships that the world has not experienced since 1990.

The original world championships by Nintendo were prescient, rendering a picture of what competitive gaming and eSports could look like a decade after. Held in more than 20 cities all over the United States, the competition catered young gamers who were testing their luck with "Tetris," "Rad Racer," and "Super Mario Bros."

World championships will go on in a similar fashion. Starting on May 20, the qualifying rounds will happen at Best Buy stores in selected US cities. Gamers who will make it in the qualifying rounds will be forwarded into Nintendo's official event on June 14 at Los Angeles' Nokia Theater, two days prior to E3 2015 launch.

Fans can watch the event live, but for those who can't make it to the actual show, a live stream will be revealed soon.

While no further details are revealed of the event, Nintendo's recent sales suggest that Wii U's "Super Smash Bros." and "Mario Kart 8" will make an appearance, Digital Trends reported.

"Whether you're tuning in online or joining us at the show, we want to include fans of all ages in this E3 with an innovative and nostalgic focus on fun," Reggie Fils-Aime of Nintendo America shared with Business Wire.

Nintendo has scheduled its Nintendo E3 Direct conference on June 16, 9am PT and just like its world championships event, it will also be made available online.
