"The Monkey King's Daughter" revolves around the adventures of Meilin Cheng, the daughter of the Monkey King, the main character in the classical Chinese epic novel "Journey to the West."

As the 3D film adaptation of the Chinese classic "Journey to the West" was announced in April, China's prominent businessman Lu Jianmin's Chunqiu Time Culture Company, along with Scott Einbinder of American company ANA Media, revealed during the ongoing Cannes International Film Festival their plans of co-producing the film adaptation of the book series "The Monkey King's Daughter" by Todd DeBonis.

According to reports, American company Red Sea Media will be taking over the international sales of the upcoming movie as well as presenting it to Cannes' consumers.

Roman Kopelevich, an official at Red Sea Media, said that he is proud and excited to produce the young-adult-themed film, which contains Chinese roots and "transcends genres and cultures."

On the other hand, Aki L.G. Aleong, CEO of Mustard See Media Group, will serve as the executive producer of the film, while Chinese company Ace Studio's Henry Luk will be responsible for the movie's production services.

American VFX company Hydraulx, well-known for their works in blockbuster films like "Captain America: The First Avenger," "Iron Man 2" and "The Avengers" will do the film's visual effects.

In the past years, Lu Jianmin has produced over 60 films.

"Wolf Warriors," a Chinese 3D war-action produced by Lu, was released in April and earned over $90 million in the Chinese box office.

"The Monkey King's Daughter" revolves around the adventures of Meilin Cheng, a 14-year-old Asian-American high-school girl who finds out that she is the daughter of the Monkey King, also known as Sun Wukong, the main character in the classical Chinese epic novel "Journey to the West."

When Chen turned 16, she was transformed into a bizarre superheroine and had an encounter with China's ancient villains together with her mythical father.

Although no casts have been revealed yet, the film is set to start shooting in December of this year in China and Canada.

The Chinese-American co-production film is expected to hit the cinemas in 2016.
