"The Fosters" creator Pete Paige recently explained his decision to show Connor and Jude kissing on primetime television last season.

During a panel interview at the ATX Television Festival on June 7, Sunday, Paige explained that it was important to show Connor and Jude's relationship because they will represent young audiences who may also have feelings for someone in the same sex.

The show creator acknowledged the fact that the two characters' kiss was the youngest same-sex kiss to have ever been shown on primetime television. However, he stressed that there is nothing wrong to showing that moment because most gay adults start learning that they are gay at a young age, according to the Huffington Post.

Meanwhile, at the time of its release last season, Paige and co-creator Bradley Bredeweg were faced with a resounding backlash among audiences who said that they thought "The Fosters" was a wholesome show for the family.

At that time, Bredeweg spoke with The Wrap to say that he believed it was time to show that intimate scene between the young boys because it is something that the rest of the world needs to accept.

In other news, "The Fosters" season 3 will premiere this week and it will feature the possible demise of one of its characters, Jesus. Last season, Jake T. Austin confirmed that he will no longer return to reprise his role, leading fans to speculate that the car crash could kill him.

"The Fosters" airs Mondays at 8 p.m. ET on ABC Family.
