"Game of Thrones" Season 6 will film in Spain again, according to reports. Based on specific locations cited in reports, Spanish publications are speculating Oldtown, the Citadel and Casterly Rock plot lines will unfold next season.
Many important "Game of Thrones" Season 5 scenes were filmed in Spain. This includes Dorne storylines featuring Jamie Lannister, Bronn and Areo Hotah. It was also the location for the Meereen fighting pit scenes featuring Tyrion Lannister and Daenerys Targaryen.
Oldtown is a historical Westeros city, having been built by the First Men. The city is home to the Citadel, where future Maesters are trained. In George R.R. Martin's "A Song Of Ice and Fire" (ASOIAF), Jon Snow sends Samwell Tarly to the Citadel to be the next Maester at Castle Black. Fans are speculating this is happening soon in the HBO adaptation.
Compared to Oldtown and the Citadel, "Game of Thrones" viewers who have not read Martin's books are more familiar with Casterly Rock. It has been mentioned several times in the HBO series. After all, Casterly Rock is the birthplace of the Lannister siblings - Cersei, Jamie and Tyrion.
Citing the Spanish fan site Los Siete Reinos and local paper La Vanguardia, the Ice and Fire fan forum summed up that Girona would be an excellent filming location for Oldtown and the Citadel. Others are guessing that Peñsicola could lend its scenery for Casterly Rock scenes.
Considering that HBO adaptation showrunners Dan Weiss and David Benioff have changed the course of Jamie Lannister's ASOIAF storyline for "Game of Thrones" Season 5, it is possible that Jamie would figure in Casterly Rock next season.
"Game of Thrones" Season 6 filming is expected to begin in June. The crew will reportedly film in Spain by September-October.
