"I Am Sam" star Sean Penn has broken off with his longtime girlfriend and renowned actress Charlize Theron. The two has dated for about year and a half.

According to Us Weekly, "Mad Max: Fury Road" star was the one to break things off with the fellow Oscar winner. The couple made their last public appearance together when they walked the red carpet at the premiere of the actress' movie during Cannes Film festival in May.

The split news came as a surprise as the former couple appeared much in love than ever at the after party of the movie's premiere at the festival. The actor was reportedly quite attentive towards the actress and the duo was often seen sneaking kisses during the entire evening. Since then, the couple was dating each other since December 2013 is not spotted together.

It is also reported that the estranged couple is no more living together. While Theron and son Jackson remained in their Hollywood home, Penn went to live in his Malibu mansion, which he had set up for sale earlier but has recently pulled off the market.

Theron and Penn had known each other for decades before their acquaintance blossomed into romance in 2013. Although it was never confirmed officially, the pair got secretly engaged back in December 2014 while in Paris.

The duo was almost inseparable after getting together and was often spotted spending time with Theron's three-year-old son, much like  a happy little family. Although the pair never confirmed their relationship officially, they often spoke fondly about each other in interviews.

"I'm in love with a woman and home is where the heart is, right," Penn told Esquire OK for its March issue, when he was quizzed about the marriage prospect with Theron. The actor was previously married to Madonna followed by a 14-year relationship with Robin Wright.
