"The Astronaut Wives Club" may follow the footsteps of "Game Of Thrones" in terms of deviating from the book. The new ABC TV series is based on Lilly Koppel's nonfiction book of the same title while the hit HBO series is based on George R.R. Martin's fiction novel of the same title.
Created by Josh Schwartz's "Gossip Girl" co-creator Stephanie Savage, "The Astronaut Wives Club" stars Azure Parsons, Yvonne Strahovski, Dominique McElligott, JoAna Garcia Swisher, Odette Annable, Erin Cummings and Zoe Boyle as the title roles, the wives of John Glenn, Scott Carpenter, Alan Shepard, Gus Grissom, Gordon Cooper, Deke Slayton and Wally Schirra, respectively.
In the recently concluded "Game Of Thrones" season 5 finale titled "Mother's Mercy," several parts were not exactly according to Martin's novel. For example, in the books, Stannis Baratheon (Stephen Dillane), Selyse Baratheon (Tara Fitzgerald), Myrcella Baratheon (Nell Tiger Free) and Ser Meryn Trant (Ian Beattie) are still alive and only Jon Snow is confirmed to be dying but that was not the case in the HBO series.
To offer new things to the audience and add to the drama, it is then likely that "The Astronaut Wives Club" will deviate from the real-life events. One of the deviations the new ABC series can do is to change the fate of Alan Shepard (Desmond Harrington).
In real life, Shepard was the fifth person to walk on the moon after making it to the moon during the Apollo 14 mission. He was the only astronaut do so among the husbands of the seven members of "The Astronaut Wives Club."
