'Grey's Anatomy' Season 12 Spoliers: Martin Henderson Plays Surgeon; Is He The New Derek Shepherd?

| Jun 20, 2015 12:26 PM EDT

Martin Henderson plays new surgeon on the upcoming season of the long-running television series "Grey's Anatomy."

After the death of Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey) in "Grey's Anatomy" season 11, the ABC medical drama adds to its cast member a new member, Martin Henderson, 40, who plays the new surgeon in season 12.

Though he is not the new "McDreamy," Henderson's character offers many possibilities, and will not just revolve around the gaping hole that Dempsey left, Hollywood Life reported. Fans of the series regulars are wondering, nonetheless, if he will be the new love interest of Ellen Pompeo's character, Meredith Grey. News has circulated that the latter will be grappling with the symptoms of Alzheimer's Diseas in the coming seasons.

The New Zealand actor who made headlines back in 2012 for dating Hollywood A-list actress Demi Moore posted a photo on his Instagram account expressing gratitude for the support he has gotten as a new addition to "Grey's Anatomy."

Henderson, who starred opposite Naomi Watts in "The Ring," could not conceal his excitement in being part of "Grey's Anatomy" and vowed to work hard and do his part to keep the show entertaining.

"Grey's Anatomy" creator and executive producer Shonda Rhimes has been under extreme pressure  to make the right casting  choices following the departure of Dempsey from the show. Henderson's addition to "Grey's Anatomy" cast may not sit well with Dempsey's avid followers who launched a petition calling for his return, which got 106,000 signatures.

Dempsey  has  expressed that that he is contented with the way things have played out and has moved on with other pursuits, Vine Report reported.

This is not the first time Henderson played a doctor on the small screen. He played such a role in the ABC television series "Off the Map." The "Secrets and Lies" and "The Red Road" actor will be seen in the upcoming film "Everest" alongside Jake Gyllenhaal and Josh Brolin.
