Chinese Tourists Add World-class Marathons in Must-do Lists

Distance running is fast becoming a popular activity in China, as domestic races are attracting an ever-increasing number of competitors.

World-class marathons are the latest to be included in the must-do lists of Chinese tourists, as apparently shown at the Gold Coast Airport Marathon in Queensland, Australia.

Data shows that the past years have seen an increase in the participating Chinese nationals in the marathon held every July. From a mere 27 in 2013, the figure rose to 161 in 2014 and 251 this 2015.

According to a research note published by Capial Economics-affiliated Mark Williams, China has took over the United States when it comes to spending in foreign travels.

This surge in Chinese tourist arrivals, as well the influx of money along with it, has prompted tourism organizations and governments across the globe to make their tourist destinations appealing and accessible to Chinese nationals.

The said Australian marathon is recognized by the International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) and has a Gold Label status. It has long been attractive for tourists in Australia's eastern region.

July has also been considered as an ideal time for marathons, giving advantage when it comes to tourism aspects to the Australian race over other IAAF-awarded running events in New York, London, Boston and Tokyo.

According to Grace Pan, the director of Tourism and Events Queensland for the greater China region, the promotional campaigns for the past three years have become significant in gaining popularity among Chinese marathoners.

As part of their heightened efforts this year, the marathon organizers commenced giving announcements and providing services in Chinese. Also, they have opened a "Greater China Resting Lounge" for runners from the region.

In the future, their promotions will also combine running events with leisure travel, offering discounts on the participants' hotels and air tickets.
